Waterfronts Help Define Our Communities

It is often where cities were founded and where they seek revitalization. For decades, the Waterfront Center has been in the forefront of the struggle to ensure that waterfronts are carefully planned, balancing the need for private investment with the absolute mandate that the public is entitled to full and unfettered access to the water. This conference addresses the challenges waterfronts face in the 21st Century through its two tracks.

The first track centers around the Colorado River—its history, its service to 40 million people in the desert Southwest, its environmental stresses, and its uncertain future. That is why we have chosen Yuma, Arizona as our host city.

Waterfronts are coping with new issues such as resiliency, better ways to treat the water’s edge, sea level rise, storm-water retention, wetland restoration plus ensuring public access. Track 2 also updates what’s ahead for Philadelphia, Baltimore and Portland, Oregon.
